Part 2: “Mixing and Pairing” unique finds!
written by: Leah R.
Alright ladies and gents, time to put my money where my mouth is. How do you mix your statement pieces into your look without breaking that eternally empty piggy bank? Here’s my favorite thing to utilize in design: HEIRLOOMS. I hate seeing tons of nick-nacky things littered all over a shelf. What is the key to sprinkling in unique family pieces? Group them in odd numbers. Bring out those items that hold sentimental value! Why shouldn’t design tell a story? Exhibit I: My Dining Room – sans dining table (we’re saving up our money for a tree branch-base glass top table!)
One of the first things you might notice is that most of my items aren’t purple. I accented with a bit of teal, but personally, I don’t like a ton of matchy matchy. I’m huge on glass pieces, and I love the glamour they bring without being overly expensive. I’ve been gifted several of these pieces, so by adding a few more thrift store finds, I was able to group them all together.
Texture is another huge decorative rule I stick too. The more texture, the more visually entertaining a grouping is. If you look closely, even the glass pairings have different textures next to each other.
This is one of my favorite features of the room! The total cost for the bar cart was $21 (click pic for DIY process), Ice holder from a friend (found at a local auction), Metal Orb Sphere– clearance item from Magnolias, Coasters from Target!
I’m really excited as well that we’re selling genuine vintage pieces now at Magnolias! Tons of lovely beautiful glassware and unique vintage finds that we have currated!
Hopefully you can see that although I splurged on some items, the majority are either heirlooms, flea market finds, or from thrift stores. Yes! We DO have these kinds of things in the area! You just have to be persistent. Some of my favorite places in Norfolk include:
- Salvation Army – very hit and miss, but I got very lucky with my bar cart.
- VR Furniture (downtown) – tons of really good priced furniture + they have an awesome bar cart in there that someone NEEDS to go buy!
- Garage Sales – Download the “Norfolk Area Connected” app on your phone > go to “What to Do” > “Garage Sales.” Here you’ll find a listing of ALL of Norfolk’s garage sales each weekend, where they’re at, and what they’ll be having! It’s an awesome feature that needs to be utilized more!
- Pilger Flea Market (Country Market Days) – Go to their Facebook page for dates during the summer. Next one is SEPT. 3RD! This has been an AWESOME place to get some great finds and barter with vendors. (It’s where I got my painted wall horse that my fiancé hates! haha!)
There’s tons of resources in our area, ask around, explore, and remember that Facebook is the best way to get connected to local people selling antiques and re-stored furniture right out of their own homes!
